History

Burton Leander Rowing Club was formed in 1847 under the name of 'The Leander Boat Club' which was later changed to Burton Leander upon affilliation to the Amateur Rowing Association. Originally the club was based at the Old Mill, Newton Road, Burton-on-Trent and did not move to its present day location until the purchase of the premises from Burton Rowing Club(formed 1865) in 1920 for £1,238.

An invoice of one of the clubs first ever boats is still in club possession and can be viewed in the gallery below. It can also be found in minutes from club meetings in 1867 that the club should purchase an eight with costs not to exceed £10

Little is known of the clubs activities in the very early years and reports of competitive racing involving Burton Leander can only be found from 1866.

The club was first represented at Henley Royal Regatta in 1938 by J.G.Rose and P.G.Rose in the Silver Goblets in which they lost to the eventual winners. Since then the club has attended the Royal regatta many times with wins in both the Thames and Wyfolds. (programmes detailing the clubs attendance and performance at Henley are now in the clubs possession thanks to Mrs Doreen Taylor, widow of Mr Ian Taylor a valued member and cox of the club during the 1950's. Whilst a club member Mr Taylor coxed the 1955 crew in the Thames Challenge Cup. Along with Henley programmes, many newspaper articles and photographs from the period are now in the clubs possession and can be viewed in the clubhouse)

The club is ever moving forward and has more recently gained successes at national and international level, with wins at Henley, The National Championships and The National Schools Regatta. Club members regularly attend GB trials, the most recent selection was Laura Wheeler to compete in the Coupe de la Jeunesse 2003 in Hazewinkel, Belgium where she won two gold medals in womens coxed fours.

Many thanks to Mrs Doreen Taylor for providing memorabilia to the club which is now on display in the club trophy cabinet.
