Rowing Development
Burton Leander Rowing Club is presently working with the local schools of Paget and Paulet through the SRB project and the Amatuer Rowing Associations, Project Oarsome. The aim being to develop a strong and successful squad of junior oarsmen and women capable of performing competitively at all levels of competition. These include provincial regattas and head races, as attended by most competitive members of the club all the way through to inter-regional and national levels of competition.
These schemes will, over the next four years, enable the club to spend £110,000 towards the development of rowing within the town. £85,000 has been spent purchasing: 4 ergometers, an eight, 2 quad sculls, 2 double sculls, 4 single sculls, 3 playboats and 16 sets of blades, along with a new boat trailer and safety launch. Burton Leander recognises the importance of rowing development and through these projects, the club has already been able to give twelve coaches a recognised qualification through the ARA's "Instructors Award".
Over the past twelve months the clubs junior ranks have been very successful within its junior ranks. These successes include Silver medals for Liam Rose at the National Schools and National Championships regattas, Gold at the GB vs France match, Bronze in J15 quads at the Inter-Regional Regatta and Gold in the Concept 2 World Winter Team Relay League at junior 18.
This success has created much enthusiasm amongst the younger members of the club. The junior section has been very fortunate to have been awarded grants from the East Staffordshire Youth Opportunites Fund and the Local Network Fund to allow the purchase of two new double/pairs and a new coxless quadruple scull.
